Dear #PodcastJunkie,
I’m back! I did not realize it had been so long since I had shared a #podcastjunkie blog with you. Don’t worry! I have not stopped being the junkie of podcasts and have in fact, added some new ones to the list. In addition to my current loves, I have added the following:
- Humans 2.0 with Mark Metry
- Infinite Potential with Deepak Chopra (although it appears there is only one season)
- Epic Success with Dr. Shannon Irvine
My number one favorite podcast to listen to is Women Your Mother Warned You About (WYMWYA) with Gina Trimarco (#trimarkable), Rachel Pitts, and Keith Walters. Most of the time you will listen in as Gina and Rachel interview a great thought leader (Tom Ziglar, Jeb Blount, and Michelle Cirocco to name a few), but every so often they go rogue on their own for some very interesting episodes.
Recently, Gina and Keith recorded an episode together where they discussed an article written by Michael Schein, which was deemed too controversial for publication by his normal media outlet. Of course, this is exactly the kind of topic WYMWYA likes to discuss. Be sure to read his article, 5 Powerful Sales Lessons from Pickup Artists, and listen to this episode to see how we can learn not just sales lessons, but everyday lessons from these pickup artists.
I want to add a disclaimer right now. Much of what I am about to share in this blog and part two is a repeat of the conversation between Gina and Keith and the original article and I want to give total recognition to the original authors, even if I do not properly cite throughout the article. Please be sure to check out the links above to read and listen to the original content.
The first sales lesson in the article is “Craft your external packaging.” While in the pickup artist world this was intended to seduce, it can be just as important in life and business. I immediately thought of a podcast I co-hosted where we talk about personal branding and what makes you stand out. This particular person was known for always wearing the same black hat. My co-host is known for his outrageous suits. However you craft your external style, you need to be sure it comes from a place of authenticity and own it.
Gina offices in my office when in Dallas and can often be found coaching our sales team while she works. Gina says she has a big personality, but I disagree. She has a HUGE personality. My team is always excited when she shows up and one of them even called her a cartoon. When asked how she felt about this label, Gina remarked it was an exaggeration of her persona, a magnified Gina if you will. This is someone who is operating from authenticity and “crafting her external package” to create notice. Keith refers to the theory of “pattern interrupt” as a sales technique which means not doing the same thing everyone else is doing. Gina definitely enters a room and immediately draws attention with her charisma and confidence.
Speaking of confidence, Gina also mentions how ugly desperation looks on someone who is trying too hard to pick someone up. This directly relates to sales as well. “If you are desperate for a sale, you won’t make one,” says the great Keith Walters. I would like to go a step further for those of you who may be job searching right now and say if you are desperate to find a job, this shows as well.
In an effort to keep this blog a reasonable length, I have broken it up into two parts. Check back for Mystery, Pickup Artists, and Sales – Part 2 and learn about pigeons and “cat string theory.” Do I have your attention??
Happy Podcasting!
